Having a baby is a wonderful experience and everyone always says it’s the hardest job in the world but also the most rewarding – both very true statements!
However, I’m sure all of us have that list of things we wished we’d known before becoming a parent! Here are my top 5!
1. That tired is just a way of life now
I used to say I was tired, I used to think I was tired. Seriously. If you’re not yet a parent, prepare yourself! You don’t know tiredness until you’re a few months into broken sleep every night and you can barely remember how to dress yourself!
2. Time to yourself is golden
I’d always wanted to spend time with people and socialise a lot before baby. Now I crave for time alone. Time without a baby attached to my hip, even time without my other half. Alone time is sacred.
3. Going anywhere is a mission
Trying to just pop to the shops when you have a baby in tow is a joke! It takes ages to leave the house and you’ll probably forget something anyway! Popping out to grab some bits from the shops turns into a day out!
4. Protective mother instincts
I knew I’d love my baby. I knew I’d protect her over anything else. What I didn’t know was how it would feel when someone said something about her that was marginally insulting, the hate I would feel towards the poor nurse giving her her vaccinations, the evil I would feel towards anyone who stood too close to the buggy and looked suspicious! Ha. The protective mother instincts are much stronger than I thought.
5. How hard it REALLY is
People say its the hardest thing you’ll ever do. People say its tough on relationships. People say it over and over again but you really don’t know until you do it yourself. You can’t know. Its impossible to understand it if you haven’t done it yet. Parenting is by far the most challenging thing on the planet… And it really is the most rewarding thing too!
